Strategies for Technology in the Classroom
Strategies for Technology in the Classroom ââ¬Å"With great power comes great responsibility.â⬠ââ¬â Voltaire I am reminded of this quote as we end this semester. Sometimes we adopt educational technologies for the wrong reasons. Either we wish to impress or we are simply misguided. Through the months, the different issues and topics discussed raised my awareness on the advantages, disadvantages, and the dangers of using technology in teaching. To describe what I learned, I will discuss everything choronologically. QR codes. The application of QR codes in a scavenger hunt intrigued me so much that I applied it in my class. The first try had a lot of problems since the design that I made was too complicated and hence, too difficult to organize. I made 30 problems with 3 variations each and 20 different routes. Although I had some students assist me, it turned out to be a little of a nightmare preparing everything. The good thing though was my students really had fun and it was enough for them to request for a second hunt. Learning from my first experience, I eliminated the routes and instead executed a plain scavenger hunt giving bonuses to the groups with the most number of QR codes. You could just imagine the ruckus resulting during the activity, everybody was running and shouting and it turned out well. Aside from the use of QR codes, one concept that I was also able to apply was Professor Queââ¬â¢s discussion of the digital divide. The activity required that students had to have a smart p hone and a QR code reader so I surveyed all my classes to check if there were enough for the groups to work on. Luckily, there were so were able to proceed. This might not have occurred to me had I not been exposed to the discussions in EdTech 210. Badges. I got this idea from our report on Emerging Technologies. It is one form of applying the principle of conditioning since it is a reward system. I was surprised by its success. Instead of awarding points, I awarded badges and logged everything in schoology. Whenever I failed to list a badge, I immediately received feedback from the concerned student about it. I even implemented this in the recitations and I was able to increase the level of participation during discussions. Instead of being afraid, students were complaining about not being given the chance to recite! Infographics. I really enjoyed doing my infographics and I decided that this was an ideal activity for my classes. Math is mostly centered on logical-mathematical and visual spatial intelligences. Howard Gardner suggests that people have different strengths with respect to the eight intelligences that he has defined and he encourages teachers to employ strategies to address the learning strengths of children. I felt that this was an ideal activity for those who had artistic skills and it was well received. The submitted infographics exceeded my expectations. Since my students belong to the digital generation, they were adept at creating digital artwork. I gave them minimal instructions and simply provided them the links that I got from EdTech 210. Equity, Legal and Ethical Issues in the Use of Technology for Education. My level of awareness on the possibilities of endangering our students when made to use online materials was heightened. Other concerns are the legal issues involved when creating online content. Students need to be reminded on respecting intellectual property and proper attribution. The first time the infographics were submitted, I asked everybody to revise them since they freely used images from the net without citing their sources. When I made flipped classroom videos, I used flipasaurus instead of youtube to ensure that students viewed only my videos and not some recommended one which I had no control. During the semester, I was planning to create a facebook account as an educational extension tool where I could post useful links on Math and their studies but delayed this to plan and study very well the possible problems of doing so. Instead, I used Schoology and UVLE in tandem to deliver content. Report 1. Essential conditions for technology integration. I am a strong believer of standards because I used to be an ISO auditor in our plant. During those years, I learned the benefits of standards and how to design them for optimization. After our plant was ISO certified, the process became less people dependent since all standards, and the corresponding production steps involved were identified. Previously, when a critical personnel resigned, he or she brought with him all his knowledge and expertise. After the standardization of the production system, this problem was lessened. We made less mistakes and were more consistent in level and quality of output. I was very glad that ISTE has formulated similar ones and because of the report, I learned how to use them in assessing whether educational technologies satisfy them. The guidelines for coaches are also a great help since I do blended learning activities and use the internet a lot for lesson extensions. I feel more confident t hat I can design courses that are more attuned to the needs of my students. Report 2. Traditional and digital media for education. Sophisticated technology is not always the best tool. Ultimately, it depends on the situation. I was particularly interested in the different examples that the group brought along. Actual samples are really more interesting than pictures and it was good that the members brought many of them to class. Most of the traditional tools I know are for Math so it was good to see how other areas like science and preschool classes use certain tools to aid learning. Report 3. Emerging Technologies in Education. I was really really glad that we got this report because I am very interested in projections and glimpses of the future. Not only did I learn the emerging technologies in the field of education but also the issues and challenges that educators face before they can go mainstream. The NMC horizon reports offer rich information and what is so good about them is that they are results of inputs from leaders and experts from different parts of the world. Most regions have the same problems but they differ in priority largely because of the economic divide. Report 4. 21st century skills. This report reminded me that I have to keep improving and to be updated on new technologies and trends in education. In this century, the demands on workers are being upped and upped since we live in a fast paced world that is media driver. It is a world that is very different from the previous centuryââ¬â¢s. Students have to learn more at a faster rate and at higher levels. They should learn how to be creative, innovative, critical thinkers, problem solvers, and effective communicators which is a tough call. This puts more burden on teachers to improve pedagogies and meet this needs. Flipped classroom. Unquestionably, this is a very useful strategy. For my case, I see a lot of applications in my classes since one of my main problems is limited classroom time. Mathematics involves conceptual understanding and procedural fluency and flipping may give me more time to address these concerns when I meet my students. I actually partly implemented this in my Math 1 cl In addition, schools must promote an understanding of academic content at much higher levels by weaving 21st century interdisciplinary themes into core subjects: Global Awareness Financial, Economic, Business and Entrepreneurial Literacy Civic Literacy Health Literacy Environmental Literacy Learning and Innovation Skills Learning and innovation skills are what separate students who are prepared for increasingly complex life and work environments in todayââ¬â¢s world and those who are not. They include: Creativity and Innovation Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Communication and Collaboration Information, Media and Technology Skills Today, we live in a technology and media-driven environment, marked by access to an abundanceà of information, rapid changes in technology tools and the ability to collaborate and make individualà contributions on an unprecedented scale. Effective citizens and workers must be able to exhibit a range ofà functional and critical thinking skills, such as: Information Literacy Media Literacy ICT (Information, Communications and Technology) Literacy Life and Career Skills Todayââ¬â¢s life and work environments require far more than thinking skills and content knowledge. The abilityà to navigate the complex life and work environments in the globally competitive information age requiresà students to pay rigorous attention to developing adequate life and career skills, such as: Flexibility and Adaptability Initiative and Self-Direction Social and Cross-Cultural Skills Productivity and Accountability Leadership and Responsibility And last but not least is Mahara. I remember Professor Que saying that at first, students get discouraged and see it as difficult to use. But once you know how to use it, you learn to love it. Initially, I felt bewildered while navigating the site but once I started posting my work, I learned its nice features little by little which is probably the reason why I feel I have mastered it. In the learning theory article homework, a large part of the article was devoted on learning, assimilation, and accommodation. My Mahara experience is surely a reflection of these processes. More and more teachers are becoming facilitators and learners are more involved and in charge of their learning. Hence, hands on activities like the Mahara portfolio, infographics, qr codes, and more are the best ways for a learner to acquire the skills. As a final word, let me say that I am very impressed with Ed Tech 210. This is not to get the good graces of Professor Que but a sincere opinion. When I enrolled, I thought we were going to make posters and the like and I realize now that I was really mistaken. Last November, I enrolled online in a UCLA led Coursera course on emerging technologies and I am proud to say that our Ed Tech courses at COE are not lagging behind. As a teacher, I learned a lot from how this course was managed. All course requirements and course expectations were defined and deadlines were set in advance. I used to think I was very organized but this was far more better. Since we are starting the next semester in August, I be benchmarking these into my course administration.

Brave New World Essay -- essays research papers
Imagine a world where all of your fantasies can become reality. Imagine a world without violence or hate, but just youth, beauty, and sex. Imagine a world of perfect ââ¬Å"stabilityâ⬠(42) where ââ¬Å"everyone belongs to everyone elseâ⬠(43), and no one is unhappy or left out. This sounds like the perfect world. But itââ¬â¢s not. Looks can be deceiving as proven in Aldous Huxleyââ¬â¢s novel, Brave New World. In his novel, he introduces us to a society that strives to satisfy everyoneââ¬â¢s wants and needs by inflicting pleasure in order to bring stability. However, in order to truly achieve this stability, old world ideas relating to art, history, and religion are abolished, and are replaced by new age technology. As a result, the people of the Brave New World now worship Henry Ford instead of God, use test tubes instead of natural birth, and use a hallucinogenic drug called soma instead of facing reality and the everyday responsibilities of adulthood. Although the appeals of this world are alluring and attractive, they are only a distraction to cover up a hidden truth that can even be seen in todayââ¬â¢s society. The fact of the matter is, as technology advances, people are becoming increasingly more dependent on it, resulting in the loss of their own individuality as they inevitably fall to conformity. Qrb/501 – Week 3 – Forecasting with Indices
Week 3 ââ¬â Forecasting with Indices QRB/501 Week 3 ââ¬â Forecasting with Indices The individual assignment for this week tasked the students to select one organization from either our week two assignment or the University material. This paper will show the data in an index using the time series data to forecast inventory for the next year. The Winter Historical Inventory Data from the (University of Phoenix, 2010) shows four years of actual demand of inventory data for the seasonal Winter Highs. Each year is divided into 12 month increments.Methods This breakdown of data allows for quantitative analysis. This approach is objective in nature compared to qualitative analysis which is developed using the judgment of experts. Results The data was plotted and graphed into a chart to show the trend. Based on the chart the index has shown an increase from year to year during December but the other winter months do not show a clear trend. My recommendation would be to would be to increase the inventory for December but hold the inventory for t he other two winter months at an average level. This would allow for the businesses minimal risk of inventory shortage and overage based on the data.

So all the money passed down from generations got lent down to him. But Nick knew he didnt just bring him out to grab lunch, he already knew he was lying about his past and how he wanted a favor all along but he had not known what it was. When they got downtown for lunch they met up with an old friend of Gatsby. His name was Wolfsheim, a mobster that kept his profile very classified and not many people knew about him he came into the story as a person who helped Gatsby out after the ware and helped him gain all the fortunes he had. Gatsby claims that he is an Oggsford College graduate, as well as a gambler, as well as the guy who fixed the world series back in 1919, and how he met him after the war. Later on, after lunch, Nick comes across Tom, Which is the guy who is having an affair with Daisy. Gatsby was shocked because he realizes who Tom was and tries to avoid him but instead, Nick introduces Gatsby to Tom which they end up shaking hands but later on Gatsby disappears. Jordan then comes into the story, She claims she was an old friend of Gatsbys and how she was there back when Gatsby came to her asking for help. Jordan than explains to Nick the truth, How he was a soldier in the War, and how in the past He was in love with Daisy but he had to depart to go to war, Claimed that Daisy could not wait for Gatsbys arrival again and how she had to marry a rich man in order to live a good lifestyle. But Gatsby was too nervous to talk to Daisy alone. So according to Jordan, Gatsby said He wants to know if youll invite Daisy to your house some afternoon and then let him come over. ( pg. 78 ). Gatsby wants to show Daisy what he has gained in the time being meanwhile while he was gone for a little over 4 years, he still has faith that Daisy will feel the same way about him after she sees his fortunes. Gatsby decided to come into an agreement with Nick due to his close relationship with Daisy and how much he knows her, he wants Nick to invite his lover Daisy over so they could meet once again and fall in love with each other and live happily together. Gatsby is trying to show Daisy all his fortune he has now compared to back then when he was just a soldier at war. Nick Carraway lives in a small house next to Gatsby humongous mansion. Its an ordinary townhouse that is cheaper than most of the houses around. Gatsby claims that he is willing to do anything for that favor. He tries to provoke his idea with money but Nick considered it as just a favor he is willing to complete for Gatsby. The day they arranged to meet up with Daisy Gatsby went out his way a redecorated Nicks house completely. Hes trying to show off his wealth toward Daisy by hiring people to rearrange Nicks front lawn and make his home more valuable than how it looked like filling it up full with flowers and which Daisy loved. According to Jordan Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be across the bay. He wants her to see his house, she explained, And your house is right next door, I think he half expected her to wander into one of his parties some night. ( Pg. 78, 79 ) Gatsby went through all those obstacles and hard work trying to get Daisy and it paid off. As soon as Daisy arrived she noticed how beautiful everything around looked. When Gatsby seen Daisy entering he panicked and got nervous asked Nick for a lot of help and then he came into the idea to go next door and take a tour in Gatsby Mansion. Daisy was fascinated by all he had and had accomplished she felt attached to him once more and notices how the house Gatsby owned was purposely across her house and how the green light he sees across the bay that flashes repetitively was in her dock how all the parties were meant for her. Daisy ends up falling deeply in love with Gatsby but she is not sure how to tell Tom because she has a mixed feeling between both of them. Daisy was planning to tell Tom she wanted a divorce with him because She already knew Tom was having an affair with Myrtle. When they were having lunch Daisy was too nervous about what Tom will do to her when she asks for the divorce. She ended up changing the topic when the words were about to come out and reveal her real feelings towards the engagement and how she felt about Gatsby. But Gatsby started to reveal the truth towards Tom on how Daisy wanted a divorce and how she had always loved him even after he was gone, in front of Jordan, and Nick Carraway. Tom neglected and refused to talk to Gatsby there he thinks its better if they go downtown and talk in a very luxuries hotel suite. Gatsby and Daisy took Toms blue car on the way there, and Tom, Nick, and Jordan went on Gatsbys luxuries hydroplane. They got to there destination first meanwhile Tom stopped to fill up gas at Wilson gas station who is also Myrtles husband and proceed until they got their hotel, later than they entered the suite where everything was revealed, Tom and Gatsby then started arguing on who was the ideal man for Daisy, after several of drinks later Daisy couldnt take it anymore and left with Gatsby back home leaving Tom, Jordan, and Nick behind. According to Gatsby on the way back a tragedy happened, he states that Well, I tried to swing the wheel- He broke off, and suddenly I guessed at the truth. Was Daisy driving? Yes, he said after a moment, but of course, Ill say I was. You see, when we left New York she was very nervous and she thought it would steady he r to driveand this woman rushed out at us just as we were passing a car coming the other way. ( Pg. 143 ) The woman who dashed in front of the car was Myrtle due to an argument that was going on between her and her husband she sneaked out and saw the same car earlier that was on her husbands shop stopping for some gas and she thought it was the same guy driving earlier which was Tom. But she ran into the road and Daisy who was driving accidentally hit her. Myrtle did not respond after the accident and unfortunately passed away but because there were witnesses out they claimed to of seen a yellow luxuries car go by and theres associated in an area where poverty is common so they were rare to see cars like that. Gatsby then tells Daisy that they should leave the next morning far away and that she should call him whenever shes ready the next day and how he thought he was going to resolve everything. Immediately Wilson thinks its Tom but when Tom hears about the tragedy he makes it clear to Wilson on how he didnt really own the car that he was just driving it in the meanwhile Gatsby took his real car. Wilson then ends up finding Gatsby but no one knew that he was in the passenger seat of the car and Daisy was driving because he wanted it that way. He risks his freedom for Daisy which is not usual nowadays taking huge risks like that can affect his reputation and a lot of bad punishments according to the Law that could happen to him. Due to the fact he kept quiet and not told anyone the truth Wilson was seeking revenge on the person who owned the yellow car with all the hate he had towards Gatsby, He ends up taking Gatsby and his own life away and Gatsby never received the call he was waiting the same day he would disappear with his love forever. Fitzgerald believes that Gatsby was a man full with hope and that he believed in something much more better than all his fortunes and business, he believed in love. The reasons why the novel ended like that was because Fitzgerald thought that nothing that is too good to be true is real. He creates Gatsbys death in order for Daisy to not gain complete feelings and attached to Gatsby which could end up separating her and her only daughter apart as well as her whole family. He was trying to show the reader how deeply Gatsby believed in love and also how everything could be achieved but there could be consequences or obstacles in the way. Fitzgerald was trying to caution readers to always tell the truth and how your actions could leave to serious consequences and which could include death if you dont take serious precautions.
